I recently came up on a article written by Bomani Jones, who sometimes makes appearances on around the horn. I'm usually not really on board with Bomani on his opinion but I though he hit the nail right on the head in this one. Its a piece he wrote about an interview Cam Newton did with ESPN. In the interview Cam deflected the thought that his critics may have been based in racism and instead purported the idea that Jemarcus Russel and Vince Young screwed it up for him. He said
"But I can't sit up here and look at it like, oh man, my critics are racist," Newton says. "I blame JaMarcus Russell and to some degree Vince Young. If you have the opportunity to make that kind of money doing something you love to do, why would you screw it up? I'm trying to be a trailblazer. If Baylor's Robert Griffin decides to come out, I want people to say 'He can be the next Cam Newton' instead of 'He's gonna be the next JaMarcus Russell.'"
If the critics weren't based on racism why would he chose two blacks quarterbacks that didn't live up to the hype that surrounded them. Here's a link to the full length article here.
It highlights a much larger problem IMO, that there is still an inferiority complex that many African Americans don't even realize that they have. Here you have a classic example where instead of him aiming criticism at the many reporters and NFL officials who tried to maliciously rip him apart before he was drafted, he chose to attack two black QB's who struggled with the same criticisms, that need I remind you Sam Bradford, Alex Smith, nor Matt Stafford had to deal with.
SMH at you Cam Newton
