Congrats Drew Brees, but whats the underlying story here

First let me say Congrats to Drew Brees on breaking Dan Marino's single season passing record and eclipsing the 5000 yd passing mark. I want to point out though that 3 other QB's (Eli Manning, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rodgers) could pass that plateau and even break the record that Brees broke last night. There one more week of NFL action during the regular so Brees could even extend the record if the Saints allow him to.
So what does it say that Four QB's are on the verge of breaking a record that has been in tact for 27 yrs in just one season? Are Qb's better now? Its possible but I don't think so, Marino is probably the best QB to never win a Super Bowl. Guys are bigger stronger and faster now so you would think it would be harder.
To me its indicative of the rule changes that favor passing offenses now. Defensive backs can no longer be physical like they once were. Its even gotten to the point where WR's feel comfortable flipping over defenders without fear of losing their limbs (See post about Jerome Simpson). Imagine if someone would have tried to Flip over Ronny Lot. But hey, thats what the fans want to see, passing offense. Defense wins Championships but offense sells tickets.
